CBD Oil Benefits
By Owen Denning
This blog will be updated as and when new benefits of CBD oil is found but for now we will add the benefits already discovered by scientists.
Cannabidiol is becoming a natural remedy used for many common ailments. A cannabis or marijuana plant has 104 chemical compounds known as cannabinoids and CBD is 1 of the 104. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the main psychoactive cannabinoid found in cannabis, this cannabinoid is the compound that gives you the sensation of getting ‘high’, however CBD is not a psychoactive like THC therefore you don’t get the sensation of getting ‘high’. This makes it appealing for those looking for pain relief or other symptoms without the ‘high’ sensation or certain drugs that are prescribed.
Extracting CBD from the whole plant and then diluting it with a carrier oil such as MCT oil or coconut oil, is the way to make CBD oil.
Can Relieve Pain
Treating pain with marijuana has been used as far back as 2900 B.C. However more recently scientists have discovered that certain types, such as CBD, are responsible for it’s pain-relieving effects. The human body contains a specialized system called the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is involved in regulating a variety of functions including sleep, appetite, pain and immune system response. Endocannabinoids, which are neurotransmitters that bind to cannabinoid receptors in your nervous system, which your body produces.
Studies have shown that CBD may help reduce chronic pain in impacting endocannabinoid receptor activity, reducing inflammation and interacting with neurotransmitters. For example, a study found in rats that CBD injections reduced pain in surgical incisions and another experiment showed that oral CBD treatment significantly reduced sciatic nerve pain and inflammation. Also some studies on human have found a combination of CBD and THC is effective in treating pain related to multiple sclerosis and arthritis. A combination of CBD and THC, is approved in several countries to treat pain related to multiple sclerosis, called Sativex. People with multiple sclerosis, used the spray for one month experienced a significant improvement in pain, walking and muscle spasms, compared to the placebo group.
Could Reduce Anxiety and Depression
Anxiety and depression are common mental health disorders that can have devastating impacts on health and well being. Depression is the single largest contributor to disability worldwide, while anxiety is ranked sixth, according to the World Health Organization. Drowsiness, agitation, insomnia, sexual dysfunction and headache, are all side effects from prescribed pharmaceutical drugs which are usually treated for anxiety and depression. Also, medication like benzodiazepines can be addictive and may lead to substance abuse, therefore CBD oil has shown promise to treatment for both depression and anxiety, leading many who live with these disorders to become interested in this natural approach.
Can Alleviate Cancer-Related Symptoms
Cancer side effects such as nausea, vomiting and pain can be helped by CBD as it may reduce the effects that are caused during chemo therapy. People received a significant reduction in pain when using CBD and THC rather than people just using THC extract.
Drugs are prescribed for people going through chemotherapy however these are normally ineffective and lead in people seeking alternatives. A study was done where they mixed CBD and THC and made a mouth spray which they used on 16 people, it then worked with chemotherapy-related nausea and vomiting better than standard treatment.
Anticancer properties have been found in CBD in some test tube and animal studies and concentrated CBD induced cell death in human breast cancer.
May Reduce Acne
9% of the population suffer from a common skin condition called acne. There is thought to be a number of factors, including genetics, bacteria, underlying inflammation and the overproduction of sebum, an oily secretion made by sebaceous glands in the skin.
CBD oil may help treat acne due to it’s anti-flammatory properties and ability to reduce sebum production. CBD oil prevented sebaceous gland cells from secreting excessive sebum, exerted anti-flammatory actions and prevented the activation of ‘pro-acne’ agents like inflammatory cytokines, which were discovered in a recent test tube study. CBD oil may also be an efficient and safe way to treat acne, due to it’s remarkable anti-inflammatory qualities.
Might Have Neuroprotective Properties
CBD’s ability to act on the endocannabinoid system and other brain signalling systems may provide benefits for those with neurological disorders. However the research area is still relatively new, several studies have shown promising results and CBD is treating neurological disorders like epilepsy and multiple sclerosis. Sativex a mixture of CBD and THC was used to reduce muscle spasticity and in a study it found that in 276 people 75% of people with multiple sclerosis who were experiencing muscle spasticity that was resistant to medications.
Could Benefit Heart Health
CBD has the power to benefit the heart and circulatory system, including the ability to lower high blood pressure. A number of health conditions, such as strokes, heart attacks and metabolic syndrome increase when you have high blood pressure therefore CBD helps to decrease the risk of these. Studies also show that CBD may be a natural and effective treatment for high blood pressure. 10 healthy men with one dose of 600mg of CBD oil and found it reduced resting blood pressure, compared to a placebo, this was shown in a recent study. It is also suggested that the stress and anxiety reducing properties of CBD are responsible for it’s ability to help lower blood pressure.
These need more research, but these are several other known benefits.
Antipsychotic effects:CBD may also help people with schizophrenia and other mental disorders by reducing psychotic symptoms studies suggest.
Substance abuse treatment:It has also shown to modify circuits in the brain related to drug addiction. It has shown to reduce morphine dependence and heroin seeking behaviour, however this was shown in rats and not yet tested in humans.
Anti-tumour effects: CBD has demonstrated anti-tumour effects. In animals, it has been shown to prevent the spread of breast, prostate, brain, colon and lung cancer, however this was only shown in test tube and animal studies.
Diabetes prevention:Treatment with CBD reduced the incidence of diabetes by 56% and significantly reduced inflammation, however this was shown in diabetic mice and not humans.
