What is Turmeric?

Turmeric is known as a ‘miracle herb’, due to all the benefits that comes with it. Its bioactive ingredients found in this herb are pleiotropic in nature – the same molecule can bind to a variety of enzymes and other molecular targets in the body.

The Benefits of Turmeric:

  1. It has anti-inflammatory agent

The main reason turmeric is known for its anti-inflammatory properties. One of the main compounds in turmeric, curcumin acts as an anti-inflammatory agent, it inhibits the activity of nuclear factor kappa B- the master protein that regulates inflammatory process.

  • Scavenge free radical species that cause oxidative damage.
  1. It protects DNA from damage

Turmeric protects cellular DNA from damage due to their genoprotective properties. When the cell is cancerous turmeric induces DNA damage and sensitizes cells to chemotherapeutic agents, however with normal cells due to its antioxidant property, aqueous turmeric extract offers 80% protection from DNA damage.

  1. It helps in heavy metal detoxification

Turmeric has the ability to bind to metal and remove them from the body (chelating property) and due to its antioxidant property, it can help with the treatment of heavy metal poisoning.

Turmeric’s anti-microbial and immune boosting properties help safe guard from infections. Turmeric is quick to help in healing scars due to its healing properties, turmeric also combats post-operative fatigue and pain.
